The association between obesity and efficacy of psoriasis therapies: An expert consensus panel

A recent study has shown a robust association between psoriasis and obesity. Obesity decreases the efficacy of biologics and may reduce the effectiveness and increase the side effects of conventional therapies. It also impacts drug survival.

In this study, a comprehensive literature search was conducted using the keywords ‘psoriasis,’ ‘obesity,’ ‘efficacy,’ ‘treatments,’ and ‘therapies,’ completed on 19 July 2024. A panel of 11 dermatologists with significant expertise in the treatment of psoriasis reviewed the articles and developed consensus statements. The panel then approved each statement and assigned a strength of recommendation using a modified Delphi process.

Of the 500 articles identified, 22 met the eligibility criteria. The panel unanimously adopted 10 consensus statements and recommendations, of which six received a strength of “A,” two received a strength of “B,” and two received a strength of “C.”

Weight control was identified as a vital component of caring for patients with psoriasis, with an increasing number of therapeutic options available.

Psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin disease, is often associated with obesity, and therapies may be less effective in patients with obesity.
